The world just got a lot less funnier now that John Witherspoon has passed away at the age of 77.

Witherspoon starred in the classic movie Friday as Willie Jones. His family confirmed the news on social media:

He got his start in Detroit’s stand-up industry in the 1970s, eventually snagging some guest-starring television roles. His first film was “The Jazz Singer” in 1980.

Besides playing Ice Cube’s dad, he starred in tons of films over the years, including “Boomerang” and “Vampire in Brooklyn” with Eddie Murphy. He frequently appeared on TV as well, including shows like “The Boondocks” and “The Tracy Morgan Show.”

Fans were shocked by the news, as Witherspoon had secured his place in comedy as “POPS” whom everybody knew and loved.

Earlier this year, the world also lost famed director John Singleton, who directed the iconic film “Boyz n the Hood.” Both Singleton and Witherspoon made a lasting impact on culture and the lives of so many.

You will be missed, John.
