Eminem is Frustrated by Mumble Rap Rise

While Kendrick Lamar says it’s the future of rap, Eminem isn’t feeling a part of it.

Eminem says he isn’t about the mumble rap movement, but he sees it rising. Rick Rubin said that “For him, [mumble rap] is a little bit of a culture shock because there’s a new wave of hip-hop that’s not really what he’s about. So he was just talking to me about how that felt. I could see he was frustrated by it.”

However, other top rappers like Kendrick Lamar are embracing mumble rap as the future of the hip-hop scene. He says that the genre will naturally evolve, and mumble rap is just another direction it is going. He just wants fans to remember the roots of hip-hop while exploring new ideas.

“I want hip-hop to continue to evolve. That’s why I can’t shun a lot of the artists that may not be a Kendrick Lamar. But this is what I tell them every time I see them … be yourself and do what you do but also know who laid down the groundwork. Don’t go on your interviews and diss them and say you don’t like them and you don’t care for them,” he said, “So talking down on the folks that inspired us to do this, it’d never be right. You dig what I’m saying? So at the end of the day as long as you be who you are but respect what got us here, that’s how you continue to evolve,” said Lamar.

It will be interesting to see how rappers embrace (or not) the new trends like mumble rap as new artists emerge and change the scene.
