Frank Ocean Wins Against Estranged Father in Court

Count one for the team.

Frank Ocean shut down his estranged father in court. His father had sued him for a whopping $14.5 million for libel over comments Frank made about his “dad.” Calvin Cooksey, Frank’s father, focused on a Tumblr post in which Frank recalled a time when his dad dragged him from a restaurant, making discriminatory remarks about a transgender waitress. The court ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to back up Cooksey’s claim, dismissing the case. He also did not show that he had been injured professionally in some way to substantiate the damages.

“I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a f—-t as he dragged me out of a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty,” Ocean wrote at the time. “That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.” Frank has been open about his own sexuality, which is why he was so vocal about how his father’s remarks stuck with him.
