JAY-Z‘s Roc Nation has signed a historic deal with the NFL, but the music mogul is facing backlash for the partnership given its treatment of Colin Kaepernick.

The NFL has been feeling the heat since 2016, when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began protesting discrimination by taking a knee during the National Anthem before a game. Since then, Kaepernick has been fighting against racial discrimination and police shootings of minorities, with help from some of the biggest celebs – JAY-Z included.

Previously, Jay dissed the NFL over its discriminatory reputation and treatment of players who chose to take a knee. He said, “I said no to the Super Bowl, you need me, I don’t need you”. Now, his company, Roc Nation, has partnered to help produce the show in order to “enhance live game experiences and amplify the league’s social justice efforts.”

Roc Nation issued a statement explaining their motives, saying that they hope that the partnership will help them create real change within the NFL rather than just giving criticism from the outside. “Roc Nation has shown that entertainment and enacting change are not mutually exclusive ideas; instead, we unify them,” the statement read.

“This partnership is an opportunity to strengthen the fabric of communities across America.” It then continued, saying, “The NFL were willing to do some things, to make some changes, that we can do some good.”

However, despite his motives being genuine and hopeful that he can bring good from all of the mess that has ensued on a platform that will allow Jay to spread his message even further, many criticized the move. Some argued that the NFL should be boycotted, and instead, JAY-Z is using it as an opportunity to make money from the very league he snubbed.

Still, he has also received tons of support by those recognizing that he is trying to make changes from within and make it something better rather than just criticizing it from afar.
